I had a brief stint in the UK (2 months) which was truly wonderful, but I’m now off on my next adventure, which promises to be differently wonderful.
I’m planning to spend a couple of months in Los Angeles on an All Hands and Hearts (https://www.allhandsandhearts.org/) disaster response program. We’re working with partner organisations in the north east of the city to clean smoke damaged homes so people can return home after the wildfires in January 2025. We’re also working with two local distribution centres that provide furniture, toiletries, clothes, etc to affected community members. It’ll be a really different project to what I’ve done before and I’m very excited to see the similarities and differences of a US domestic response program compared to an international recovery program. Watch this space.
If you want to donate to All Hands and Hearts then I’ve set up a Just Giving page https://www.justgiving.com/page/kath-mcguire-3. This is based in the UK and is great for UK taxpayers as the UK government add some extra through Gift Aid. People not in the UK can still use the same link to donate. The money here doesn’t go specifically to the project I am currently working on but does go to the UK trust who distributes the money to All Hands and Hearts projects around the world (which might include the projects I might work on in future).
October might be Sri Lanka. November through January are likely to be India. There’ll be education projects with different organisations in both of those countries. Plus catching up with friends.
As you can tell, quite a bit of this is to be confirmed. There’s just enough structure in this to make me feel I’ve got direction and purpose plus enough scope to take advantage of opportunities that pop up along the way.
