And one of the essential, but not glamorous aspects of travel is taking care of my health. I’m a big fan of vaccines – I mean, no one likes a Hep B injection, but I have a feeling that Hep B itself is significantly worse! Anyway, no Hep B injection for me this time, but I did top up my Cholera resistance. This is an oral vaccine that comes in two doses taken a week apart. It’s actually mildly pleasant (if one doesn’t think too hard about what’s in it). I’m booked in for a Covid booster and am hoping to get a flu booster as well.
I’ll also be getting good travel insurance and will be taking a first aid kit with me too – a sterile needle kit that I’m hoping to never use, sticky plasters, travel sickness meds, painkillers, oral rehydration sachets, suncream, insect repellent, etc.
I’m very lucky to live somewhere with a good healthcare system, to be able to afford to pay for the vaccines I want and in a time when medical science is as awesome as it currently is (and only getting better). I’m also incredibly privileged to have good health – I do work at staying healthy but I certianly don’t discount the good luck I’ve had thus far.
PS: If you’re reading this and haven’t done something good for your physical or mental wellbeing today, why not do something now – a quick walk, eat an apple, swap the next glass of wine for a cup of tea, 5 mins of meditation, book a check up, etc? Whatever works for you here and now. 🙂
